| Sea urchin Egg SEM 1030X |
| Sunday, July 31, 2005 |
This is an image from work. What you see here is a sea urchin egg, but just the egg (never met a sperm so to speak). The big grid it is on is really very fine mesh, four times as small as a window screen would be.
It is a pretty funny story, but when you mate urchins in the lab, you have to stimulate them into producing the sperm and eggs. You do this by injecting them with a small amount of, basically, salt water. And this puts them in the mood, as it were, and in a few min. you get either orange or milky ppt. And the rest is history. In a few min, the microscopic stork comes and you have a developing sea urchin embryo. |

| Vendee Globe |
| Friday, July 29, 2005 |
The vendee globe, an around the world solo race on a monohull. Among the most dangerous of sports, these are some very serious people. The most recent race is over, but during the races this page gives you all the info, images, videos, positions on a real time map, etc etc... That is a 60 or so foot boat btw... So that gives you a feel for the water conditions.

So basically this is a camera system to be put inside cars for work, rental, etc... These are videos from the demo web page to show how it works. You may need to dl a plugin to play them. Wait for them to load, press play (and some you can play rear view as well, press that button). Its worth it trust me!
Guy breaks mirror A really close call A guy who was sleeping on the job The best one, be sure to watch rear after you see it the first time Side Hit Broken Mirror Hit something... What speedbump?

| Sand 17x magnification |
| Sunday, July 10, 2005 |
SEM image of sand 17x

This is an image I took of sand grains under the SEM. This is pretty low magnification, only 17x, but already the detail of the grains can be seen. I like low magnification images like this because you can still connect the image to the object as we know it, but you can get a taste of the micro world that waits further study.
Again I ask that you not distribute my images without credit (name, web page, etc). Not that its a big deal, but there is probably some corporate legal issue with these that I dont know about... |

| Wasp Eye 1000X |
| Wednesday, July 06, 2005 |
Wasp Eye 1000X

This is another SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) image I took, of the very same wasp head. This one is on the eye surface, at 100 times higher magnification (approx) than the last wasp image, and 1000x more than real life. The perfect nature of this and other structures found at such small scales is pretty wild. These individual polygons are certainly as small as most cells.
Feel free to save these and any images I post, but please dont distribute them without credit! :O) It costs about 40 bucks an hour for me to take these! |

Wasp head 19x magnification

This is one of a bunch of images I have taken with the SEM, an electronic microscope able to show very high detail at high magnifications.
This is just the head of wasp, the yellow jacket kind, that I happened to find when I should have been doing real research!
