Baby Deer
Tuesday, May 30, 2006

I found this little guy by the wood pile in the morning. He seemed very sick, possibly even about to die. He was alone, and not moving at all. The ants were already on him.
If you found the same, what would you do? Would you call someone to take it away (and either help it or kill it as needed) or let it die on its own? Would you try to give it milk? What if you knew there were dogs at large in the area?

You left a comment on my blog page a long time ago. Just wanted to return the favor. I think you're from NY. Makes me so homesick. I'm from NJ but relocated to Illinois. It's not home. There's no place like home.

But what did you do in the end ? you ate it ? you made a strikingly surprising alcoholic beverage from it ? you gave it milk ? called a vetinarian or something ?
The suspense is just unbearable !!

Call local animal control. I recently heard that fawns are born with NO scent so prey cannot find them. DO NOT touch the fawn or she will have a scent that a prey could find.

I left it alone until I was talked into trying to give it a drink. So I slowly got next to it, and just as I was about to give it a nice warm bowl, it looked at me, yelled, and ran off. Turns out it may have been left there, by accident or not, but it was not sick.

So I should have left it alone. But on the plus, it ran into a better part of the woods where deer pass every night, so I can only hope it would get picked up there.

If you knew there were dogs in the area, why would you be in that area to begin with? Just help the poor baby. :-) What did you end up doing anyhow?

Jason: and to all the next assholes who react that way: I look at random pages from time to time out of pity, and leave a smile face so people know their work is getting appreciated. Why do you freak out about it? This is the internet, do you really know anyone who comments on your page?

And the deer: The end is not clear: he ran off when I tried to give him a warm bowl of suds, but seemed to be ok. The problem is, I dont know if his mother ever found him, or if he simply hid in the woods and starved. I dont know enough about deer young and if the mother lets them stay behind for a while or if they must always stay with. If I find a body next time, I will tell you all. But lets just hope for the best right?

I think in fact that baby deers just lay motionlesse when their mother is away, and they're supposed to be invisible thanks to their color and white spots. Well, i'm not sure of that, maybe it's just a dim memory from Bambi or whatever, but well, it matches the comment about baby deer not having any scent... i'll check that up

  • At 5/31/06, 5:26 PM, Blogger Maïa said…

OK so now that's for sure :
The baby deer lies motionless for the first days of its life and its mother just comes from times to times to give it milk.
Humans MUSTN'T come near or the mother will just abandon the fawn (is that the word ?). Then when it's strong enough it will just go away to its herd.
I suppose if it ran away it was strong enough so that's all for good.
I found all of it there :

hum, sorry, it's in french. Well, I am...

Well thank you for that information, I was afraid of this, but I remain hopeful that the mother found it in the new spot. I should have stuck by my guns and not gone up to it... But there is always hope that it is now ok.

In the future, I will know not to come near it no matter what, and also in the future the mother might think about a better spot than our wood pile!

Technically, (at least if you live in PA), the Game Commission should be called, and they take care of it from there.

My dad works for the Game Commission, and we have nursed baby deer back to health. It is possibly the hardest thing to do - feedings at 3AM, mixing up this gross milky liquid, and actually bottle feeding them.

So, I'd either call some sort of Game Protector in your area, or let nature take it's course.

i believe best action to call some nature protector or something like that. But my feelings says let nature decide this little deer's fate.

im too bored to read all these comments so I will just tell you what's up. The baby deer is not a baby, it is a newborn or at most a few days old. Mama deers will basically hide the little bastards sometimes... I find a few every year in my woods. You here a bunch of deer crashing around and then you can spot the babies they leave behind for whatever reason with a flashlight.

You should have just left it alone. Now its probably dead because of you... Eaten alive by dogs or wolves. OK! Sweet dreams!

Thanks senor, I am glad to see you are reading so deep into the older posts. I do keep them on hand for this reason. But I had to reduce the number from 100 to 50: the load time was too crazy.
