Actually he probably would never have been able to recreate that : )
Lucky that it hit the ground first also, from the sound it was probably returning at a few hundred fps. Probably enough to cause bad damage or even kill with a head shot. But after hitting the ground it was probably 50 - 100 fps only. And even then it seems to have hit his ear protection.

I got hit in the chest by a ricochet from a .38 special. I was wearing a leather jacket and it felt like I got kicked by a mule. It left a nasty bruise.
