It's been interesting to watch, literally. His facial expression in recent weeks has been one of defeat and sadness - indicating that information which he's stubbornly refused has begun to sink in. And yet the farewell speech, from what I've read, indicates that he maintains his loyalty to his private religion, which is simply the stance of a boy in the first flush of puberty determined to prove himself before other males.

 

I suspect that ArtSparker is correct. I wonder at what age he first began to use alcohol & perhaps drugs, as I am sure that is where his maturity was frozen forever.
