483 - Cannonball floating in mercury

This incredible element is so dense that it can float a person with only a bit of displacement. (About 25 lbs per 1000 ml.) Even lead will float in mercury! (But not iridium, tungsten, or osmium.)

    Do either of you know enough materials science or chemistry to explain to me why something so dense is a liquid?
