First of all, let me preface this by saying that I think the theory of evolution by natural selection is essentially correct, unless you consider our human actions to be unnatural...

But it is quite a leap of logic to compare it with the provable fact that the earth is topologically and almost geometrically equivalent to a sphere. Even the Babylonians knew this fact. Evolution is far less intuitive, much less verifiable by the scientific method.

That is not to say I believe that we should spend "equal time" teaching "Intelligent design". But what exactly would you call those glowing cats from a couple of posts ago? And more to the point, corn, cows, chickens, etc.

If an intelligent agent manipulates evolution, is that intelligent design?

    There is your can'o'worms.

When humans manipulate things, it is artificial selection. But it is still evolution. Because we have used evolution for thousands of years to create edible plants and better livestock, it is hard to ignore that the process exists. Yet many people still do. Evolution is on par with gravity, and the round world. Each has overwhelming evidence behind it, including an understanding of the mechanisms that make any other outcomes impossible: If you understand genetics and cellular biology, you see that there is no way to prevent evolution. It is an automatic result of inheritance and variation.

Also, it is worth noting that "Theory" in science does not mean guess or opinion. It is a well documented model that explains observations. Hypothesis is more of a guess, or an educated guess.

The real point is, the whole teach both sides is dumb. You teach science in science class, and that is all.

You teach science in science class, and that is all.It is impossible to avoid straying beyond that boundary, because there is no real boundary between science and world-view. It isn't math.

When I first studied the TOE, in my 7th grade earth science course, my teacher was interrupted by a student who thought that evolution is bunk because God created the species in a few days hard work... My teacher opened the last 15 minutes of the class to a discussion about this, and took his turn first by making the point that you made above, about guided evolution and the inevitability of this process.

After everyone had their say that wanted to talk, I asked my teacher what they thought, and he said he believed that God used evolution create the species, over a few billion years. I suspect this is the majority opinion in America (although my class was actually at the American School of Milan, and taught to me by a Mr. Newton, a direct descendant of Sir Issac).

Hypothesis does not happen without prejudice... at least not any interesting hypothesis. And prejudice comes from world view. It is myopic to state that the only thing that should be taught is "science" as if that is a static body of knowledge and driven only by facts and not opinions.

Do not take my words to mean that I think that some curriculum on Creationism or Intelligent Design should be forced into the classroom. I would (and have) fought against that. But it is worth discussing as part of the life sciences curriculum as a historical footnote if nothing else. And I think it is unwise to adopt a reactionary posture to willful ignorance. Instead take the Microsoft approach: Embrace and Extend!
