467 - Chimp Update
Tuesday, February 17, 2009
A 200 lbs chimp, which was kept as a pet in Connecticut, had a history of violence. Possibly, just possibly, because he was a 200 pound chimp that was forced to live in Connecticut.

Here is what happened next:

The chimp got Lyme Disease. The chimp attacked a friend of his owner, then trying to get him off, the owner stabbed him with a kitchen knife and beat him with a shovel. For some reason known only to the chimp brain, getting stabbed by a kitchen knife and beaten with a shovel, made his mood worse. When the police responded, he broke a mirror on a car, causing him to be shot by the aforementioned police. Somehow, despite months of training and many semi-automatic handguns, the police mortally wounded him, but did not put him down right away. The chimp ran away and died slowly in what chimps call "horrible agony combined with fear and blind rage."

Also, the chimp was drugged with tea spiked with Xanax to try and calm him down. Turns out a side effect of this drug is to reduce stability in already unstable minds.

Wild animals should be left in the wild. If they are used for research or films (the latter of very little ethical merit), they should be returned to a sanctuary or zoo. Failing that, the animals should be killed forthwith to prevent further suffering. Wild animals (animals not specifically bred to be domestic, or by virtue of behavior suitable for the home) do not belong in our homes, they belong in theirs.

Doesn't Google want to make money? Also, anyone considering Adsense should know that Google has cut their payouts by about 75% since 2005.

465 - Russian Radio Comm. System
Friday, February 13, 2009

"Before the satelite communication was implemented Russian military bases located at the low-populated places such as shores of Arctic Ocean or frozen Siberian forests had to communicate somehow. It was practically impossible to connect them with wire because required too much effort, and was not secure at all - just a small cut off of the line would cause days of searching for it at -40 weather.

So Russian army has implemented the network of stations that fired their messages to ionosphere then the message was reflected from it and returned to the Earth surface - right to another station. By connecting those stations in relay chain they could communicate through all 10000 mile wide Russian land instantly.

After the sat connections came into play some of the stations were discontinued some were converted to satelite link.

Below you can see the map of this system, and the basic stations. People were sent there to serve their military service for two years guided by full time military commanders. Some still remember those times with a nice nostalgic feeling, some don’t - just imagine to live in the middle of the nowhere for couple of years with the only task to service some strange looking antenna."

463 - Quantum of Solace
Tuesday, February 10, 2009

"Imagine finding out you got rejected from community college, then finding out that your alcoholic father got arrested for domestic abuse, you lost all your life savings in a Ponzi scheme, and all of this happens to you while you're on the space shuttle Challenger. Then you wake up and it's all a bad dream, except you realize that you're at work without clothes on, and work is NASA and you're really on the space shuttle Challenger. That's what this movie is like, only infinitely worse. Everything about this movie pissed me off, save for the lesbian finger bang scene. Except even that sucked because it wasn't in the movie."

462 - Mt. Washington image by Brad Washburn
Sunday, February 08, 2009

Obviously these are small promo images. Mt. Washington is the tallest mountain in the North East, and features "the worst weather in the world." While I find it hard to think that it is worse here than at, say the summit of K2 or at the south pole... It is the home of the highest wind speed ever recorded outside of a tornado: 247 MPH as of recently. This is, obviously, exceptionally windy.

459 - Google Earth 5.0
Monday, February 02, 2009

Google earth has come out with some new features. But most important to users like me, is the quality of the images. Resolution in some areas is simply breathtaking. Here are images of some of my favorite kayak destinations. You can now see seals on little gull island, even recognize the rocks at this point. Check out Central Park, you can see the little square blankets. I was even able to find an herb barrel and some walkway stones which are all well under 1 meter. I think resolution here has to be 1 foot in many places.

Please check out Google Earth 5.0, ill let you noobs find it.
